Collection: Claire Newman-Williams | Artist

Biography

Claire Newman-Williams is a British fine art photographer, born and raised in England, who moved to America in 1988 where she worked primarily as a portrait photographer. Her photography appeared in numerous national and international publications, including Time Magazine, The New York Times and The Advocate, before she returned to the UK in 2005.
A New Direction

After twenty years working as a commercial and editorial photographer, Claire Newman-Williams had become disenchanted by the hours spent in front of a computer tweaking digital files and making people look pretty. She wanted her work to reflect more of her life. For Claire, the change that led to becoming a fine art artist came when she stopped looking for things to photograph that could be "fine art" images and started looking instead for emotions and memories, feelings and thoughts she wanted to express.

Claire Newman-Williams began combining her own photography with text and the inscriptions that other generations have left behind in old books, building a story through layers of recalled experience and nostalgia. These collectable mixed media artworks, gathered in her project "Strata", are printed on textured Japanese paper and mounted on antique book covers, making each piece a one-of-a-kind work of contemporary photographic art.

Claire Newman-Williams' limited-edition prints and original fine art photographs are sought after by collectors of contemporary photography, nostalgia-inspired art and mixed media looking for distinctive, story-rich pieces.
