Biography
Louise McNaught is a British contemporary artist who completed her Fine Art Degree BSc (Hons) at the University of Greenwich in 2012 and has worked as a professional artist ever since, with international representation. In 2018 she also became a published author, and her artwork has been featured in art fairs in Milan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Stockholm, Brussels and across the UK.
Louise's vibrant animal paintings depict wildlife as God-like, supreme beings that deserve our respect and protection, reflecting on the delicate relationship between humans and nature. She highlights humanity's destructive tendencies towards the natural world, sometimes in controversial ways, with endangered species featuring prominently in her work. Her imagery often carries a duality: what is happening to the animal itself, and how we feel psychologically about the impact the human race is having on these species.
Her focus on endangered species led to the book 'Survival', created with worldwide publishers Big Picture Press in September 2018. The idea grew from her 2016 solo show of the same name with George Thornton Gallery. The book features twenty endangered animals painted by McNaught, alongside facts about each animal's plight and conservation efforts. 'Survival' is sponsored by the well-known charity Tusk.org, with proceeds going towards their conservation cause.
By subverting traditional representation, Louise hints at darker consequences while paradoxically giving her animals an elevated status. Her creatures, suspended in numinous space without context or background, become metaphors for the human condition and psyche. By drawing the viewer's attention to the animals' presence and energy, McNaught shares the awe that the natural world inspires within her.
"Her work presents a pleasant balance between traditional technique and new age spunk." - The Quiet Lunch Magazine
