Biography
Rosie Emerson is an award-winning British contemporary artist creating unapologetically feminine works on paper. Her figures draw reference from archetypes old and new, elevating her subjects to goddess-like status, and her unique blend of photography, printmaking and painting has made her one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British art.
Born in Dorset in 1981, Rosie graduated in Fine Art from Kingston University in 2004 and currently lives and works by the sea in West Sussex. Inspired by her love of theatre, performance and shrines, she uses lighting, costumes, set and prop making alongside printmaking and painting to create otherworldly one-off pieces. Her work explores the surface level, both physically and metaphorically: the sheen, the facade, the presentation, the performance, the stuff of dreams and fantasy. Her photography draws on the drama of the baroque and the ethereal qualities of Pre-Raphaelite works, with further influences including late medieval and Renaissance paintings and magical realist literature.
Her subjects range from well-known icons to models, actors, dancers and friends, photographed in her studio. She then uses numerous printmaking techniques, including screen print, photopolymer etching and Cyanotype, a light-sensitive process often painted in circular or arch-shaped motifs, enabling her to montage objects with real-size photographic negatives. The works are often hand-painted or gilded with gold leaf.
"The technique itself has an element of magic about it; it was also a wonderful discovery to be able to combine painting, collage and photography in this way." - Rosie Emerson
Rosie Emerson's work is widely collected and exhibited both in the UK and internationally through galleries, art fairs and museums. She created a new world record by making the world's largest Cyanotype photograph, measuring 46.8 square metres. She has been awarded the Bridgeman Studio Award and shortlisted for the Young Masters Art Prize, and has undertaken private and commercial commissions for The Dorchester London, The Waldorf Astoria New York and brands including Harvey Nichols, The Ivy Club, Sony, Triumph, Red Bull, Toms, P&O Cruises and Annoushka Jewellery. Her work has also been featured in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Another Magazine, The Financial Times Magazine and The Sunday Times Style Magazine.
Rosie Emerson's limited-edition prints and original Cyanotype artworks are sought after by collectors of contemporary figurative art, feminine art and British printmaking looking for ethereal, gilded and dramatic pieces.
