The title says what the piece is about: identity arriving at itself. Gallagher began her career as a traditional portrait artist before becoming disillusioned with the constraints of conventional representation, and her practice has been tracing a trajectory from the isolation of childhood to the self-awareness of adulthood ever since; the collage itself is her metaphor, fragmenting imagery and reconstructing it, the way a self is formed.
