From a distance, 'Deliverance' may appear to be a depiction of a typical butterfly. Take a step closer and things become more interesting: Yap uses skulls and imagery sourced from vintage erotica to create the patterns adorning the butterfly's wings. The metallic green ground is the most naturalistic of the series: a deep, shifting green that echoes real butterfly wings at rest, which makes the darkness hidden in the pattern land as a genuine surprise. It belongs to her most sustained body of work, the butterfly as a symbol of transformation and freedom, and this mini format is its accessible on-ramp, with hand-foiled 50 × 50cm editions selling at £450.

Originally from Singapore, Cassandra Yap is an artist and art director based in London. Her work often explores the juxtaposition between dark and beautiful subjects to create the surreal. Fuelled by her love of pin-ups, the female form and what she describes as an unhealthy obsession with vintage erotica, her photomontage halftone style images are dark, bold and humorous with a kinky edge. Her art delves into reclaiming the narrative around desire, exploring how women experience and express love in both its tender and fierce forms to feel empowered, celebrated and seen. She has collaborated with AllSaints for their 30th anniversary, customising a signature leather jacket for a Serpentine Gallery charity auction in aid of Shelter UK, and was commissioned by Penhaligon's to create bespoke postcard artworks for their 155th anniversary.
