Why collectors love it

An etching with a hand-applied mark, from 2004, and the second half of the pairing the series title promises: 'Equating I' and 'Equating II', two compositions weighing against each other, the equating of the name made physical. Christie's records the series precisely, aquatint in colours with hand colouring, impressions numbered within the edition of 150, so this is an etching enhanced by the artist's hand rather than a plain screen print. At £350 it is also the better-priced half of the pair: the Artist's Proof impressions of 'Equating I' trade at £450, so this edition impression is the accessible way into the set.

About the artist

Charlotte Cornish is a painter and printmaker who has been working professionally for over 30 years, with much of her work held in public, private and corporate collections, including colleges within the University of Cambridge, the Bank of England, Fujitsu, the British Medical Association, the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge and UCLH. She studied Fine Art at the Slade School of Art in 1992, with further studies at Central Saint Martins, and later returned to the Slade as an Honorary Research Assistant in the Printmaking Department followed by part-time lecturing at De Montfort University. She is an elected member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (ARE). On her inspirations, in her own words: "I am drawn to places full of intense atmosphere, colours, noises, smells, and I hope to capture something of these experiences in the work... I have always loved exploring the possibilities of colour and colour relationships and the infinite potential to create dynamic connections and reactions".
