Why collectors love it

In the artist's own words, published with the piece: "I've always looked back to innocence and nostalgia in my work... In these pieces (designed as a diptych) we see two rooms, two interiors, the kind of familiar domestic interiors that should inspire a sense of safety and comfort. In one, we see my mantelpiece, the clock always set to 2.40, or twenty to three: 23 being my favourite number and the date of my birth. The rooms are populated with symbols of refuge; the bird returning to the nest, children climbing the stairs... At the same time these cosy rooms are invaded by a sense of time passing, the fragility of memory; a cracked vase, a barbed wire fence, a fire, rain clouds. And finally the cherry blossom, which in Japanese culture is a reminder that life is overwhelmingly beautiful, but also tragically short". Every detail is personal and coded: the clock set to his birthday, the VW Beetle in the diptych's other half that was his first car, restored with his stepfather and his means of reaching art college. A signed silkscreen with glazes from the Coriander Studio, published by CCA Galleries, and already sold out at TAP Galleries.

About the artist

British contemporary artist Dan Baldwin (b. 1972, Manchester) began at Eastbourne College of Art and Design in 1995 and received a BA (Hons) from Kent Institute of Art and Design, later working as a studio associate tutoring younger students before moving to Brighton. Pop Art has always been a major influence, alongside Sir Peter Blake, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockney and Robert Rauschenberg. After a brief appearance on the BBC's 'The Apprentice' in 2005, Baldwin became a full-time artist, with a 9-day group show in the windows of Selfridges, Oxford Street and two solo shows at Forster Gallery, Shoreditch. His work has been exhibited worldwide including Basel, Tokyo, Miami and New York, and his collectors include Damien Hirst, Gilbert & George, Jake Chapman, Sir Elton John and Jo Whiley. His motifs recur and contradict: skeletons, swallows, crucifixes, children's book illustrations, robins, knives and flowers, symbols of death, life and love reflecting his preoccupation with the big questions of human existence.
